FC Augsburg have used the current international break to gain some match practice – taking on the FC Bayern München U23s in a friendly on Thursday afternoon. Julian Schieber (28’), Mads Pedersen (31’) and Noah Sarenren Bazee (34’, 38’) scored all of FCA’s goals in the space of ten minutes as Schmidt’s men ran out 4-1 winners.
Martin Schmidt gave his thoughts after the game:
Overall verdict: “I was extremely pleased with the performance up until half time. We struggled to find a way through for the first ten minutes due to the unfamiliar setup, but then we found our feet and scored some nice goals. After the break, Flo should have made it 5-0, but we ended up conceding a superb goal. We made a lot of changes after that, which doesn’t necessarily improve things for a team, but we wanted to give the youngsters a few minutes of game time as well. The idea was to keep certain players in the swing of things, such as Rani Khedira, Philipp Max and Florian Niederlechner, who haven’t played much recently. On the whole I am very pleased, it was a lot of fun.”
Style of play: “It was the kind of game where you can be very creative on the ball, but we were also able to see what our biggest weapon is: winning the ball back and capitalising. You can see that everyone has made this a habit. Julian Schieber played well, Noah Sarenren Bazee brings real tempo to the team.”
The youngsters: “Noah has recovered from his injury and is solid and stable again. He had to come off early however as he felt a little pain. We were very pleased with Mads Pedersen as well; he was back to the Mads we got to know during preseason. In September and October, all the preseason games took their toll on him a little. Now he is back to his dynamic best, quick and skilful as ever. Iago also put in a good performance. He has excellent vision and awareness and he often points out things that he notices.
