A day before leaving the training camp in Marbella, FC Augsburg contested their second and final friendly match of the winter break. At the El Nuevo Mirador Stadium, head coach Manuel Baum’s men faced second-division Hannover 96. After a goalless first half, one goal came for each team in the second period and the encounter ended all square (1-1).
After a light training session in the morning, Baum was forced to do without a few players who were carrying slight knocks. Dominik Kohr, Daniel Baier, Georg Teigl and Andreas Luthe sat out of the game, alongside Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker who is currently in recovery training.
FCA took the initiative right from the beginning and created several chances. Hannover’s keeper Philipp Tschauner kept out an effort by Jonathan Schmid in the fifth minute to prevent FCA from taking an early lead. Ja-Cheol Koo then saw his strike fly over the bar in the ninth minute. Dong-Won Ji had the ball in the back of the net in the thirteenth minute but the referee disallowed the goal due to an apparent offside. Martin Hinteregger saw his header miss the target as it too went over the bar.
Hannover did have one chance in the first half. Felix Klaus, son of former Augsburg U19 coach Fred Klaus, hit the bar with a headed effort in the eighteenth minute.
The first highlight of the second half came in the 59th minute when Artur Sobiech received the ball from a cross and put it into the net to give Hannover the lead. FCA were quick to respond and substitute Raul Bobadilla scored the equaliser in the 63rd minute. Just minutes later the ball was in the Hannover net again, however the referee ruled Ja-Cheol Koo’s goal as offside. Markus Feulner had a good chance to score the winner put Tschauner managed to parry his shot wide.
FCA scored again in the 89th minute through Marco Richter, however once again the referee ruled for offside. That was the third time that an FCA goal was ruled offside this afternoon.
The game ended in a 1-1 draw, just like our previous friendly against AZ Alkmaar in Marbella.
