A few FCA players were in action for their countries on the weekend, including Marwin Hitz with Switzerland and Konstantinos Stafylidis with Greece. While Switzerland managed to secure their place in the World Cup next year, Greece’s dreams of reaching the tournament were shattered.
Switzerland 0-0 Northern Ireland
Marwin Hitz and his Switzerland teammates have qualified to the 2018 World Cup. Despite only drawing 0-0, it was still enough for the Swiss to make it through in light of their 1-0 win in the first leg. Hitz was on the substitutes bench, but wasn’t brought on.
Greece 0-0 Croatia
For Konstantinos and Greece, however, their World Cup hopes are no longer. After losing 4-1 in the first leg, the 0-0 draw in Piraeus was not enough to turn their fortunes around. FCA’s left back Stafylidis didn’t see the pitch.
Ghana 1-1 Egypt
Daniel Opare and Egypt will also miss out on the World Cup. That was the case even before the “Black Stars” played their final qualifier against Egypt, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Opare was on the bench and didn’t feature.
