Defeat in Hamburg

First Team 10.12.2016, 18:21
FC Augsburg's four-game unbeaten run came to an end after they lost 1-0 away at Hamburger SV on Matchday 14. Filip Kostic scored the only goal of the game for the hosts in the 68th minute. Dirk Schuster made no changes to the starting eleven that played in a 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt last week. Gojko Kacar (FC Augsburg) and Matthias Ostrzolek (Hamburger SV) both faced their former clubs this afternoon. Both sides made an energetic start. FC Augsburg had a chance to take the lead in the third minute when Dong Won-Ji crossed the ball into the box from the left towards Halil Altintop who couldn't quite lose his marker to get a proper shot away. Michael Gregoritsch had the first chance for Hamburger SV, but he couldn't get his long-range effort on target. The game settled down after that and most of the action was happening in midfield. Domink Kohr made a spectacular clearance from three metres out in the 35th minute after a dangerous free-kick by Gregoritsch. HSV were playing with slightly more purpose going forward than the away side. Referee Daniel Sieberet showed Lewis Holtby a red card just before half time after he struck Dominik in the face. The teams went into the dressing room with the scores level at 0-0. Augsburg had a huge chance to go in front after the break. Jonathan Schmid played it into the centre to Altintop from the right-hand side but the Turk could only slice the ball over the bar. Gregoritsch then blasted an effort towards the FCA goal and it took Hitz a couple of goes to ensure the ball was secure. The home side tried to hit the Fuggerstädter on the counterattack with Augsburg being a man up. However Kohr then also saw red in the 66th minute after a foul on Gotoku Sakai, picking up his second yellow card of the game to leave both teams down to ten men. And just two minutes later, Nicolai Müller hit the post with a fierce shot from 18 metres out but the rebound fell straight to Filip Kostic, who finished to give Hamburg a 1-0 lead. Augsburg increased the pressure in the final minutes of the match as they sought to try and find that equaliser. Dirk Schuster brought on fresh strength in attack in the form of Takashi Usami. Despite a dangerous cross from a Daniel Baier free-kick in the 89th minute and a header from Marwin Hitz in added time, Augsburg just could not create that clear-cut opportunity and it finished 1-0 to the hosts.
