October: FCA fall to late defeat in incredible match in Dortmund

First Team 01.01.2018, 15:00
As 2018 draws to a close, we look back on some memorable FC Augsburg moments throughout the year. Today in our end of year review: October. On matchday seven, FC Augsburg travelled to face Borussia Dortmund in what turned out to be an incredible match. FCA took the lead twice against the Bundesliga leaders but trailed 3-2 in the final minutes. However, the visitors managed to equalise in the 87th minute to create a grandstand finish. Augsburg eventually left Dortmund empty-handed after conceding a 96th minute winner. During the second international break of the season, FCA U23s coach Dominik Reinhardt left the club in search of a new challenge. Alexander Frankenberger, head coach at the Augsburg academy, took over from Reinhardt. Retro matchday against Leipzig One of the highlights of the year took place just after the international break as FCA welcomed RB Leipzig to the WWK ARENA. The match was held exactly 111 years after former club FC Allemania were founded. To mark the occasion, FCA wore a retro kit and celebrated the history of the club. From the team bus to the scoreboard, everything was in place for the celebrations. Unfortunately, the spectacle on the pitch didn’t live up to the occasion as FCA and Leipzig played out a goalless stalemate. Two fixtures in a week followed the retro matchday as FCA secured their second away win of the season in Hannover. The visitors secured a 2-1 victory before returning home and sealing a place in the DFB-Pokal last 16. FCA needed extra-time in their cup clash with Mainz but a Caiuby winner secured a 3-2 victory and a place in the next round.
