Schalke post-match reaction

First Team 12.03.2017, 14:20
FC Augsburg left Schalke empty-handed on Sunday afternoon. The hosts scored three decisive first-half goals to put the match beyond doubt. Here is all the reaction to the disappointing defeat. Paul Verhaegh: "We did a lot of things wrong, especially in the first half. We conceded straight after the opening chance. I should have reduced the deficit at 2-0 with the penalty but I didn't execute it. We should not be looking at the table. Instead we need to perform on the pitch and we didn't do that today." Moritz Leitner: "We didn't manage to do anything that we had planned to and that is obviously disappointing but now we need to look forward and put this behind us." Marwin Hitz: "We gave the opposition far too much space today and unfortunately conceded again from set-pieces. We simply need to do better at defending that." Martin Hinteregger: "The scoreline says it all. We were poor in the first half and the second half wasn't bad but Choupo-Moting and Kolasinac made the difference today. Our only chance to get one back was the penalty but we also didn't manage to convert that." Manuel Baum: "The first goal came from a set-piece and then we were second best in a one-on-one situation. The fact that we weren't able to score the penalty and that we conceded when we only had ten men on the pitch due to Bobadilla's injury sums it up. We weren't compact enough and defended badly. We will analyse that and improve on it. We must now not let ourselves be unsettled by this, we have to play to our strengths." Markus Weinzierl: "We played well and deserved the victory. We took our chances and the key moments went our way. We then went down a gear in the second half but I am satisfied overall with the win."
