Hoffenheim match reaction

First Team 21.01.2017, 22:55
FC Augsburg lost their opening match after the Christmas break for the first time in four years. FCA were not able to build on their performance from the first half after the break and were defeated 2-0. Read all the post-match reaction here. Philipp Max: "Of course we are very disappointed, we expected more of ourselves. We wanted to carry the momentum from the games just before the winter break forward and we played well in the first half but we did not create enough goalscoring opportunities. It became much more difficult against a good team after we conceded the first goal and in the end we couldn't come back from that." Martin Hinteregger: "When you find yourselves behind after two minutes in the second half, then everything you set out to do at half-time goes out the window. It certainly could have been a lot closer but in the end we didn't manage to get a point." Paul Verhaegh: "We set high expectations of ourselves and we played well in the first 45 minutes. There were a lot of tackles and it was a bit here and there. Unfortunately we found ourselves behind too quickly and then it became clear that it was going to be tough against a team as strong as Hoffenheim, because you then have come from behinds." Marwin Hitz: "The match was completely even before the break but after the change of ends, we unfortunately conceded straight away and Hoffenheim were very strong after that. "We had two or three good attacks towards the end but we couldn't find an answer." Manuel Baum: "I thought we were really good in the first half. Unfortunately our build-up play didn't flow as well in the second half, which meant that few clear chances materialised. It was also difficult mentally after the quick goal. In my view their second goal was clearly offside. Had it only been 1-0, it would have been a very open game." Julian Nagelsmann: "We didn't get into the game in the first 25 minutes because Augsburg pressed us very well when we were going forward. We were well in the game after 30 minutes though. We didn't really get stuck in enough for the first 45 minutes against a good side. Our tempo was a lot quicker after we got the goal and we deserved to win. I also want to give credit to FCA because it was a good game overall."
