Iceland and Finnbogason defeated

First Team 23.06.2018, 13:08
Iceland were beaten 2-0 by Nigeria in Group D on the second matchday of the World Cup. After their impressive result against Argentina, Iceland were handed their first ever World Cup defeat. Iceland wanted to take advantage of Argentina’s slip-up against Croatia the day before to make a big step towards qualifying for the last 16 of the tournament. The “Vikings” started the match attacking and had early chances to clinch the lead through Gylfi Sigurðsson, but couldn’t convert their chances. German Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr's side also came close to scoring, but likewise couldn’t finish. Both teams were stable in defence and the game went into the break without any goals to show for the action. The “Super Eagles” came out of the dressing rooms and put Iceland under pressure after the change of ends and reaped the rewards for it with their first goal of the tournament. Musa got on the end of a cross from Moses to slot it home from close range and open the scoring. Iceland threw the whole team forward, but didn’t manage to grab an equaliser. Nigeria were more fortunate and won the game with Musa doubling their lead in the 75th minute. Gylfi Sigurðsson took a penalty shortly before the end of the match after FCA player Alfreð Finnbogason was fouled in the box; however, Sigurðsson’s penalty missed the target (83’) and the score remained 2-0 after six minutes of added time.
