FCA celebrate home win

First Team 17.12.2016, 13:44
FC Augsburg beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-0 in Manuel Baum's first game in charge as interim coach. Martin Hinteregger got the only goal of the afternoon with a header from a corner in the 75th minute. The victory means FCA remain unbeaten at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga. Baum made several changes to the starting XI after former FCA head coach Dirk Schuster was sacked earlier in the week. Jeffrey Gouweleeuw made his return to the starting line-up after recovering from a collapsed lung. Jan Moravek was Baum's preferred choice over Halil Altintop, while Ja-Cheol Koo also started the match. In addition, new signing Takashi Usami made his full starting debut. The opening few minutes of the match were cagey as both teams sought to give nothing away. It took until the twelfth before Raffael had the first chance of the agme, but Hitz came out of his goal at exactly the right time to quell the attack. Philipp Max put in a cross at the other end after some great build-up play and found the head of Ji, but the South Korean could not get anywhere near the Gladbach goal with his effort. The away side had more of the ball in the first half but they could not make the breakthrough against a firm Augsburg side. Former FCA man André Hahn hit it from 18 metres out in the 22nd minute but it failed to cause Hitz any real problems. Ji also let loose from 19 metres after 31 minutes but he was not able to find the target. There was little to choose between the two teams as they headed into the dressing rooms at the break. The hosts started the second half strongly and created an opportunity early on. Jonathan Schmid earned a free-kick after being fouled and Martin Hinteregger got his head on the resulting cross. However he could not connect cleanly and it sailed over. Mahmoud Dahoud tested Hitz with a deflected long-range effort on the hour mark, while the Syrian saw his shot fly over the bar just six minutes later after some nice work from Raffael to find him. Augsburg rarely had the ball close to the Gladbach goal and when they did get near the edge of the away side's box, their defence was there to deal with it. However Martin Hinteregger leaped brilliantly from a Schmid corner in the 75th minute to find the back of the net with a bullet header from ten metres out as he gave Augsburg a 1-0 lead. It was a first goal of the season for the new signing from Salzburg. Gladbach pushed for the equaliser in the final minutes of the match but they were unable to really threaten the Fuggerstädter's goal as FCA held on to claim victory.
