Danso wins his first international cap

First Team 04.09.2017, 15:33
FC Augsburg have a new international - the youngster Kevin Danso got his first senior cap on Saturday for Austria. Unfortunately however, he couldn’t prevent their 1-0 loss to Wales in World Cup qualification. Wales 1-0 Austria The Austrians had their backs against the wall for much of the game against Euro 2016’s surprise package, and they eventually succumbed to them 1-0. Ben Woodburn scored the day’s best goal in the 74th minute, and with it made Austrian hopes of qualifying for the World Cup very unlikely. With eight points Marcel Koller’s side are still numerically in with a shot of finishing second, which would take them into a play-off game. A bright spot was the introduction of Kevin Danso in the 27th minute, as it was his debut for his country. Two of his FCA teammates also saw the pitch, as Martin Hinteregger played the whole game and Michael Gregoritsch came on for 12 minutes at the end. Their next game is against Georgia on Tuesday 5 September. Finland 1-0 Iceland Despite losing to Finland 1-0, Alfred Finnbogason and Iceland still have every chance to qualify directly for the World Cup. Alexander Ring got the early winner for the home side in the eighth minute, while Iceland’s Birkir Saevarsson was sent off for a second yellow in the 59th. Finnbogason was taken off in the 88th minute. With three games remaining, the gap between Iceland and group leaders Croatia stands at three points. Iceland go again on Tuesday 5th September against second placed Ukraine. Greece 1-2 Belgium A frantic period decided this tie, as three goals were in a four minute period. Jan Verthongen scored first for the visitors (70’), before Zeca quickly responded with the equaliser (73’). Only a minute later, Romelu Lukaku got the winner for the Belgians and with it ensured automatic qualification to the 2018 World Cup in Russia. FCA’s Konstantinos Stafylidis started for the Greeks, before being subbed off in the 69th minute. After the loss Greece fell behind Bosnia-Herzegovina in second place, and will now have to battle the Eastern European nation for a place in a play-off. Latvia 0-3 Switzerland The Switzerland national side extended their lead in group B, and maintained their perfect winning record in the process. However, FCA goalkeeper Marwin Hitz’s side still have to push for automatic qualification, because Portugal trail them by only three points. Who finishes in first place in the group will be decided between the two sides in their matchup on Tuesday 10 October in Portugal.
