Daniel Baier apologises for his actions

After his team’s 1-0 victory over RB Leipzig, Daniel Baier has publicly apologised for his actions which have unfortunately cast a shadow over what was a great team performance. Baier had the following to say on his Instagram account: "I couldn’t sleep at all last night, and so I’ve had a lot of time to really think about what happened. I realise now that I’ve acted in a way that is not appropriate in my position as not only a role model, but most importantly as the captain of this club. My behaviour came as a result of being caught up in the emotion of the game, and I have no idea why I did it. So I have to extend my sincerest apologies to all those who were offended by my behaviour. I also apologised to the team before training today, because my actions have unfortunately overshadowed the result. I hope that everyone at Leipzig can accept my heartfelt apology. All the best, Daniel."

Nach dem gestrigen Spiel habe ich in der letzten Nacht kein Auge zugetan, mir auch die Zusammenfassungen unseres Spiels angesehen und mir viele Gedanken gemacht. Dabei bin ich zu der Erkenntnis gekommen, dass ich in einer Szene meiner Vorbildfunktion als Kapitän des FCA nicht gerecht geworden bin. Aus der Emotion heraus habe ich mich zu einer Geste hinreißen lassen, von der ich selbst nicht weiß, wie ich dazu komme. Dafür entschuldige ich mich bei all denjenigen, die dies als Beleidigung aufgefasst haben. Ich habe mich heute vor dem Training auch bei unserer Mannschaft entschuldigt, weil nun meine sinnlose Geste die tolle Leistung der Mannschaft in den Hintergrund rücken lässt. Ich hoffe, dass auch die Verantwortlichen von RB Leipzig nach einer Nacht anders denken, nachdem ich bereits auf dem Platz und auch später in der Leipziger Kabine versucht habe, mich zu entschuldigen und das Missverständnis aus der Welt zu räumen.
