The 3-0 defeat at 1. FC Nürnberg was Augsburg’s first defeat after three unbeaten games. “We are disappointed with our performance and the result,” explained FCA head coach Manuel Baum. André Hahn: “We knew what to expect from them, but still didn’t manage to perform. We didn’t fight hard enough and didn’t play good enough football. We weren’t focused enough in the final third and set ourselves up poorly for their set-piece goal. We opened ourselves up at the end and then they punished us on the counter.” Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “Their first goal was too easy and I just can’t fathom why we basically gave up fighting towards the end. We didn’t push hard enough for the equaliser and still allowed them space on the break to score.” Philipp Max: “We had prepared ourselves correctly for today’s game. A 3-0 defeat is a heavy one, but we had chances after going 1-0 down, which we ultimately didn’t use. We have to forget about this game quickly and improve for the cup game on Tuesday.” Rani Khedira: “Our first half performance wasn’t up to scratch. Nürnberg were more aggressive and mentally alert. We improved slightly after the break, but then fell asleep for their first goal from the set-piece. We walked right into a trap for their second goal. Overall, we have to be honest and say that wasn’t good enough today.” Manuel Baum: “Congratulations to Nürnberg on their win. We knew what they would bring to the game. I think it was clear in the first half that both teams are fighting against relegation. It wasn’t a pretty game. After the break we improved, but then an unnecessary set-piece goal gave them the advantage. We then played the wrong style of football, as we kept hitting it long. We are disappointed with our performance and the result. Now we have to learn our lessons from today’s defeat.” Boris Schommers: “It was clear from the first minute today that we wanted to win. We could have scored a goal early on. It was an even game after that. We needed the opening goal today, which we got. The lads gained some confidence through that and thus saw the win home. We lost a bit our organisation slightly after going ahead, which made it even sweeter to take our chances on the counter at the end and win comfortably.”
