Baum: "Can't trust positions in the table"

First Team 23.01.2018, 18:01
After the 2-0 defeat in Gladbach, FCA are on the road again just a week later as they travel to Cologne. Preparations ahead of the clash with bottom-of-the-table 1. FC Köln have been underway since Monday. After Tuesday’s session, Manager Manuel Baum spoke to us about the following:   Personnel: "A few players took knocks on Saturday, but they’re nothing serious – as things stand, no one is a doubt for the weekend. Hinteregger and Danso were snowed in down in Austria, they weren’t able to attend training this morning, but will join us this (Tuesday) afternoon in the gym." The defeat in Gladbach: "We were a bit too sloppy. What made us so strong in the first half of the season was that everyone did their job and we were creative as a result; this was lacking against Gladbach. From the outside we keep hearing how good we are, everyone’s talking about Europe – maybe we’ve started to think about it ourselves a little, and neglected the things that got us here in the first place. The team’s fundamentals: "We pride ourselves mainly on good defending and quick turnover play. As a team, we always have a plan which we try to implement together on the pitch. Before Christmas and against HSV that all went to plan, but against Gladbach it didn’t; we have to learn from this." The upcoming fixture against Köln: "You get the impression that Köln are back to playing the way that made them so good last season. They’re very compact at the back, turn defence into attack quickly and now have more players at their disposal. Furthermore, they pose a threat from set pieces. We’re not judging our opposition by their position in the table – we’re judging them individually. We need to be ready from the first minute in Cologne." The relegation battle: "It is good for us to not be involved in a relegation scrap. On the other hand, we had expected to be down there at the start of the season, so it wouldn’t knock our confidence if we were. You can’t trust table positions in the Bundesliga, because if you look properly, you’ll see that just as many points separate first from second, as separate second last from second."
