Well earned win in Bremen

First Team 11.09.2016, 14:22
FC Augsburg won their first away match of the season against Bremen and will return home with the three points. The team won 2-1 in Bremen just like they did in April last season. Aron Johannsson put Bremen in the lead just before the half-time whistle through a penalty. But Jeffrey Gouweleeuw (52') and Konstantinos Stafylidis (73') scored goals in the second half to earn the win for FC Augsburg. Head coach Dirk Schuster had almost a full squad available for the match against Bremen. New signing Martin Hinteregger made his debut for Augsburg in Bremen, replacing Christoph Janker. Apart from that, Schuster trusted the same starting eleven that lost 2-0 against Wolfsburg on the first day of the season. FC Augsburg had their first chance of the match after 2 minutes when Alfred Finnbogason shot from about twenty yards out. Both teams were looking to score in an intensive first-half of football however there were very few real chances on goal. After around half an hour, Ja-Cheol Koo played a perfect pass to put Finnbogason in on goal. The Icelander was one-on-one with Felix Wiedwald but his chip over the goalkeeper went just wide of the post. FC Augsburg were looking more likely to score than the hosts. Serge Gnabry had a chance to score for Bremen in the 36th minute but he blazed his shot over the bar. There were a lot of chances at the end of the first half. Fin Bartels squandered a chance for Bremen when he blazed his shot way over the bar from just a few yards out. Two minutes later, Martin Hinteregger brought Zlatko Junuzovic down in the penalty area and the hosts were awarded a penalty. Aron Johannsson gave Marwin Hitz no chance as he slotted the ball into the left corner just before the half-time whistle. FC Augsburg went into the dressing room 1-0 down at half-time. The hosts were playing well at the start of the second half, however, Jeffrey Gouweleeuw met the ball from a corner to equalise for Augsburg in the 52nd minute. FC Augsburg now had the upper hand and Caiuby nearly scored the second goal but his shot went over the bar. It was an open game and Bremen were also counter-attacking well. Ja-Cheol Koo was one-on-one with the goalkeeper after a throw-in but Wiedwald managed to parry the South Korean's shot from a tight angle. Augsburg were looking very dangerous on the attack and it was a superb free-kick just outside the box from Konstantinos Stafylidis that put FC Augsburg in the lead. Caiuby nearly increased Augsburg's lead to 3-1 but missed his shot from a tight angle. FC Augsburg managed to hold on throughout the five minutes of added time to earn their 2-1 victory.
