April: Emphatic victory in "final" against Hamburg

First Team 23.12.2017, 12:45
An exciting 2017 lies behind FCA. Twelve months with many highs and a few lows as well as several records set. As the year draws to a close, we take a look back at what’s happened. Today we look back at the events of April. After a two-week international break, a very busy schedule awaited Augsburg with three fixtures for FCA in one week – Augsburg came out of this week without a single point to show for their efforts. They suffered a 6-0 loss away to Bayern Munich, followed by a 3-2 loss to Ingolstadt and a 2-0 defeat to Hertha. With six matches to go in the league season, Augsburg found themselves in the relegation zone. While other clubs would have collapsed under the pressure, the team got behind Manuel Baum and maintained their trust in the head coach, which is what was needed. Nine Augsburg players remained on the pitch at the end of the home game against Köln as they were defeated 2-1 by the Billygoats. The next week, FCA were leading Frankfurt 1-0 with twelve minutes left to play, but conceded three goals in the final stages and came away with no points. FCA overtake rivals Hamburg in the table The next fixture was against HSV, who were one place ahead of FCA in the table and the match had the feel of a final about it. The team stood under enormous pressure and simply had to deliver – and they did so in spectacular fashion. Augsburg thrashed the Rothosen 4-0 with two goals from Halil Altintop and one a piece from Philipp Max und Raúl Bobadilla to leapfrog HSV in the table.
