Alfred Finnbogason: “I'm fired up for the last three games.”

First Team 26.04.2018, 15:25
Before Saturday, the last time Alfred Finnbogason took to the field in an FCA shirt was 95 days ago, on matchday 20 of the Bundesliga against 1. FC Koln. A calf injury has kept him since but our Icelandic talisman was back in the XI last weekend and showed fans what they had been missing. Fans and players alike could breathe a sigh of relief as Finnbogason put to bed many of the problems that have plagued FCA in his absence. In the 29th minute of the match he set up Michael Gregoritsch for the opening goal and then got himself on the score sheet later on, as Augsburg strolled to a 2-0 home victory against relegation-threatened Mainz. These three points not only brought Augsburg to the 40-point mark but also ensured FCA’s safety in the Bundesliga for the coming season. “It was tough getting out of bed the next morning but it’s a good pain and one I haven’t felt in a long time – I’ve missed it,” said Finnbogason. The 29-year-old is still on a wave three days after the win, “The game went great. We played well and with intensity but there’s a lot that went into the performance. We have now ensured Bundesliga football for next season and securing it at the weekend was extra special for me because I set up one goal and scored the other.” The team's focus however will now switch to the game in Berlin on Saturday 28th April at 15:30 CEST, where FCA will be looking to replicate the wonderful performance against Mainz. “My goal is to be available for selection. We want to pick up as many points as we can now in the rest of the season. I hope that’s not it for our season – we want to keep picking up points. I’ fired up for the last three games against teams we know are strong, so we just need to take things step by step,” said Finnbogason.

Next goal: FCA record?

Tobias Werner is the current record goal-scorer for FCA in the Bundesliga with 23 goals. With Finnbogason's goal against Mainz, his total now moves up to 22. “I can break the record at the weekend. It will be nice when it happens but it’s an added bonus that isn’t massively important for me,” revealed the striker.
